ECC Building Expansion Project Report

Presented by Dean Weller for the Design/Build Team – Oct. 12, 2025

Our current team is:  Myself, Brad Ashworth (chairman of Property Team), Rick Wappenstein, Jeff Poynter, Steve Simmons (building engineer), Bill Simmons (architect), and Rusty Wintrow PME advisor.  Greg Brubaker is our Elder Board liaison.  Bill Jennings has also served with us as a past chairman of the Property Team.

In the past 2 years, we have been gathering specific information primarily from our staff, but also from ministry leaders, teachers & helpers, and maintenance personal.  We’ve asked each to identify concerns and needs concerning building space and what is needed to do ministry better.  We have identified the following as our primary needs:

  1. Classrooms – 4 minimum (6-8 would be best to accommodate Youth and Adult classes
  2. Make RM 101 2-3 times bigger
  3. Multi-Purpose Room (MPR)
  4. Additional restrooms as required by code and convenience
  5. Secondary entrance for the expansion
  6. Extra storage – point of use for ministry items, maintenance, table & chairs

I want to explain each need in a little more detail for your understanding and compare some to our previous building on Barron Street.

  1. Classrooms – We currently have 5 classrooms and a mother’s room.  Barron St. had 17 classrooms which included rooms for:  Mothers & infants, nursery, crawlers, all children’s ages, youth and adults.
  2. Expand Rm. 101 – Our current space is 30’ x 43’ or 1290 SF.  Compared to Barron Street’s Fellowship Hall at 40’ X 66’ or 2640 SF – double the size we have now.  This new space would be multi-purpose and primarily used for all activities serving food.
  3. Multi-purpose Rm. (MPR) – This room would be located in line with classrooms and be used for Children’s Ministry Sunday Morning Worship, youth and class events, chapel, prayer room, small weddings & funerals.
  4. Additional restrooms – add according to code requirements & convenience.
  5. Secondary entrance – additional easy access to classrooms and would allow for better security – could lock down educational hallways in case of an emergency.
  6. Extra storage – yes, we have the barn for our major storage needs.  This would be for quick access for ministry items such as classroom supplies, podiums, TVs, flip charts, easels, tool cart, scissor lift, ladders, folding tables & carts, folding chairs & carts, extra red chairs. This would help eliminate storing these items in the Great Room, Room 101 or conference room and the need to constantly move them for events.

Additional facts:

This expansion would be to the north of this building, using the two hallways as connectors.  Expanding in this direction helps us access all utilities to keep costs down.  It would be a steel structure like our current building with metal siding, and gable metal roof.  We would try to match the east side to look similar to our current look.
