The elders would like to give our congregation an update regarding our proposed separation from the Brethren denomination. This promises to be an interesting year as we seek God’s direction during this period of prayer and discernment with the district board. Together, we have ironed out several small items, but unfortunately, we are still pretty far apart from a financial point of view. We are continuing our work and ask that you hold them and our elders in prayer realizing that neither the district board or our elder board have ever negotiated a separation like this before.
One mandatory step if we vote to separate from the denomination involves removing the words “Church of the Brethren” from our official name. We are recommending that we go ahead with a name change now even before our separation is approved by our congregation. After more than two years of prayer and discussion by members of the name change committee, our church leaders, and the elder board, all the groups have agreed on a new name: The Eaton Community Church.
There are many reasons for choosing this name and we will be discussing them and explaining the entire process during two identical informational meetings to be held on Sunday, February 24, at 5:00 pm and Monday, February 25, at 6:00 pm at the church. We will then be voting as a congregation to approve the name change on Sunday, March 10, following each service. There will be informational sheets available at the meetings.
“Eaton Community Church” may be a new name, but we will still be the same Christ loving, bible anchored, life sharing church that we have been and will “become,” continuing to spread God’s love through words and actions in this community and around the world.
